Walker Law Merges with Patterson Law

Associated Areas of law

Patterson Law, an established Nova Scotia law firm with a more than 80-year history, is expanding its Halifax presence by merging with Walker Law Inc., a boutique law firm practicing in residential real estate, wills and estates and administrative law. The combined practices will operate under the name “Patterson Law”, effective November 1, 2017.

Walker Law’s principal lawyer, Catherine S. Walker, Q.C., her daughter Alexandra Walker (2015 bar call), and her team of staff, will continue to work at their offices on Quinn Street in Halifax, providing clients with legal services especially in key practice areas of real estate, wills and estates and administrative law.

The merger is part of Patterson Law’s continued planned growth strategy.

Catherine Walker has over 40 years’ practice experience, beginning her career in 1977. She articled in Halifax and New Glasgow, then settled into practice in Halifax with a small firm before heading out as a sole practitioner in 1979. Since that time, she has practiced primarily as a sole practitioner and received her Queen’s Counsel designation in 1993.

Catherine is an active, highly respected leader in the legal community. She is a past President of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and was the Nova Scotia representative on the Council of the Federation of Law Societies participating at the national level in matters of regulation of the practice of law from 2008-2014.  She has served on numerous Barristers’ Society committees, and in 2004 she was awarded the Society’s Distinguished Service Award for her volunteer activities.

She has been involved in continuing education as an organizer for over a decade of provincial property conferences for the real estate bar, Chair of the CBA Real Estate Section (Nova Scotia Branch), Director and one of the founding members of the Real Estate Lawyers’ Association (RELANS).

This merger sees Catherine Walker’s strength in property and wills and estates law complement and further enhance Patterson’s existing expertise in these areas. Managing Partner George White says “This merger is part of our planned growth strategy and puts us in a stronger position to respond to the marketplace by providing clients with the legal services they want. From this new location, we will be able to expand our residential property and wills and estates services thereby benefitting families and individuals in the Halifax area.” He added: “Catherine Walker is one of the most highly regarded residential property lawyers in the province. The addition of Catherine, and her talented group of staff, adds great value to our clients. We welcome them with enthusiasm and look forward to having them as part of the Patterson Law team.”

The merger with Walker Law Inc. will expand Patterson Law’s presence in Nova Scotia and bring the number of offices the firm has across the Province to four.

Catherine says: “Our team is delighted to be part of such a progressive and successful larger practice. This merger allows us to provide a wider range of services to clients, who we would normally have to refer on to others if they required advice outside of our practice areas.  Joining with Patterson Law gives us the ability to offer our clients the complete service, whatever their legal matter may be.”
